Smoketown Women's Mural

The Steam Exchange received a grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women to work with female youth in the Smoketown neighborhood to create a community mural. The content of the mural was inspired by interviews conducted by the youth with elder women in the neighborhood in an attempt to capture the history of the neighborhood from the perspective of the women who have lived there for generations.

Project participants worked with local media company, Kertis Creative, to learn how to conduct and professionally record interviews. The Steam Exchange then hosted an overnight design retreat for the girls at the Kentucky Foundation for Women’s Hopscotch House. Visiting community mural artist, Catherine Hart, joined the group for this process, and worked with the girls for the following 10 days to start the mural. The girls painted the mural on site for several weeks. All neighborhood youth were welcome to join in with the mural painting. The project concluded with an opening reception and mural unveiling!
